Microsoft has recently adopted a strategy of showcasing its games on rival platforms during Xbox events, reflecting the company's broader push towards multiplatform gaming. This shift became evident during the Xbox Developer Direct, where games like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 were displayed with logos for PlayStation 5, alongside Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Game Pass. This move marks a significant departure from previous showcases, such as the June 2024 event, where PlayStation 5 logos were notably absent during the initial announcements of Doom: The Dark Ages, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred expansion, and Assassin's Creed Shadows.
In contrast, Sony and Nintendo maintain a more traditional approach. Sony's State of Play, for instance, focused solely on PlayStation without mentioning Xbox, even for multiplatform titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Similarly, Nintendo's showcases have not included logos for competing platforms, even when games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Onimusha: Way of the Sword are slated for release on other systems.
This strategic shift by Microsoft was further explained by Xbox gaming boss Phil Spencer in an interview with XboxEra. Spencer emphasized the importance of transparency and honesty about where Microsoft's games are available. He noted that the decision to include PlayStation logos in showcases was discussed as early as last year but faced logistical challenges. Spencer's vision is clear: he wants players to know where they can access Microsoft's games, whether on Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, or Nintendo Switch, emphasizing that games should be the central focus of the industry.
Spencer acknowledged the differences between open and closed platforms but stressed that Microsoft's strategy allows for larger game development while supporting its native hardware and services. He believes this approach, though different from competitors, prioritizes the games themselves and aims to reach more players across various platforms.
Looking ahead, it's likely that future Xbox showcases, such as the anticipated June 2025 event, will continue to feature logos for PlayStation 5 and possibly Nintendo Switch 2, for titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the next Call of Duty. However, don't expect Sony and Nintendo to adopt a similar approach anytime soon.
