Avowed has achieved a successful launch, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales performance. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel shared her thoughts on the future of the game, hinting at the possibility of expansions or a sequel.

Although no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to direct games and her interest in further developing the world of Avowed. She remarked, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The journey to create Avowed was fraught with challenges and significant changes. Patel candidly shared that the development process was messy but ultimately rewarding. The project, which began in 2018, faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated the complexities of independence and potential acquisition. Microsoft eventually acquired the company, and Avowed was announced in 2020.

However, the team had to make tough decisions, including scrapping multiplayer features and other functionalities. A pivotal moment came in January 2021 when the leadership team was changed, and the game was rebooted under Patel's direction. Managing over 80 people during this transition was challenging, but Patel's focus on enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, along with shifting to open zones instead of an open world, proved beneficial.

Reflecting on her experience, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian's Vision for Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is now considering a tactics game set in this universe. During a Twitch livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game.

Sawyer stated, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.

While there is interest in creating a tactics game, Sawyer also expressed his ambition to develop Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at $100 million, a significant leap from their previous efforts with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
