Sony has addressed the near day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further specifics regarding the cause or preventative measures for future incidents.
To compensate affected users, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly disrupted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
This incident highlights concerns among players who have long criticized Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games. While less severe than the major data breach of April 2011 (which caused over 20 days of connectivity problems), the lack of detailed explanation from Sony has left many PS5 users dissatisfied.
