"Elden Ring: Nightreign Abandons Key FromSoftware Feature"

Summary

  • Unlike most modern Soulsbornes, Elden Ring Nightreign won't feature an in-game messaging system.
  • FromSoftware has decided to exclude this signature feature due to the fast-paced nature of Nightreign, which won't allow players enough time to engage with messages.
  • Despite this, Nightreign plans to enhance and retain other asynchronous features from Elden Ring.

Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the ability for players to leave messages for one another, a decision confirmed by a senior FromSoftware official. This choice to omit the iconic messaging system from Elden Ring Nightreign is described as a practical move by the developers.

The feature, which allows players to create messages from pre-approved words, has been a staple in FromSoftware's games. It has traditionally fostered high levels of player engagement, whether used to assist others, mislead with messages like "hidden path ahead," or share humorous quips. Many fans consider this system an essential component of the modern Soulsborne experience.

However, this beloved feature will not make a return in Elden Ring Nightreign. In a January 3 interview with IGN Japan, game director Junya Ishizaki explained that the game's emphasis on multiplayer and shorter session times—around 40 minutes each—makes an asynchronous messaging system impractical. Players would not have the time to engage with written notes during the intense gameplay.

Nightreign Isn't Ditching All of Elden Ring's Asynchronous Features

While Elden Ring sessions can last for hours, FromSoftware expects Nightreign to be played in much shorter bursts. This design choice aims to create a more streamlined and fast-paced experience, leading to the decision to remove the in-game messaging system.

Nevertheless, Nightreign will not abandon all asynchronous features from its predecessor. For instance, the bloodstain mechanic will return, enhanced to allow players not only to see how others died but also to loot their ghosts.

FromSoft Wants Elden Ring Nightreign To Be 'Compressed'

The removal of player-to-player messaging aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Elden Ring Nightreign as a more intense and focused multiplayer experience compared to the original game. The adoption of a three-day structure further supports this goal. In his discussion with IGN Japan, Ishizaki emphasized that FromSoftware aims to create "a compressed RPG" filled with variety and minimal downtime.

The reveal trailer at TGA 2024 confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign is set to launch in 2025, though FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have not yet specified a more precise release window.
