Take-Two CEO Affirms Support for Legacy Games Amid GTA Online's Future Uncertainty Post-GTA 6

by Bella May 04,2025

The impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) in the fall of 2025 has left many GTA Online players pondering the future of their beloved game. GTA Online, Rockstar’s highly profitable live service, continues to attract players even a decade after its launch. Its success has influenced Rockstar's focus on live services over story DLCs for Grand Theft Auto 5, a decision that has not sat well with all fans. However, the more pressing issue is what will happen to GTA Online once GTA 6 hits the market.

With GTA 6 expected to introduce a new or enhanced version of GTA Online—potentially named GTA Online 2—current players are worried about the fate of their investments in time, effort, and money. This concern becomes more relevant in early 2025, as the launch of the new GTA Online might be just around the corner. The dilemma facing players is whether to continue investing in the current version, knowing a new one is on the horizon.

In a recent interview before Take-Two's third-quarter financial report, IGN posed this very question to Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two. While Zelnick couldn't comment specifically on any unannounced projects like a new GTA Online, he offered insights based on Take-Two’s approach to other games, such as NBA 2K Online. Launched in 2012 and followed by NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017, both versions continue to be supported and played, suggesting that Take-Two does not abandon older versions when newer ones are released.

Zelnick emphasized, "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made. But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles... We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

This statement hints that if there is a GTA Online 2, it might not spell the end for the original GTA Online. If players continue to engage with the current version, Rockstar may choose to keep supporting it. However, with much still unknown about GTA 6—apart from its release window and the first trailer—Rockstar will need to provide more details in the near future. In the meantime, players can consider Zelnick’s comments on the potential impact of skipping a PC launch for GTA 6.
