In an engaging interview at Gamescom, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon delved into how Mortal Kombat 1 will distinguish between the iconic characters Omni-Man and Homelander. Boon reassured fans that despite their similarities, the development team at NetherRealm Studios has meticulously planned to ensure that these two heroes feel distinct when players take control of them in the game.
Ed Boon Confirms Homelander and Omni-Man Will Play Differently
During his conversation with IGN, Boon addressed the community's concerns about the potential overlap in combat styles between Homelander and Omni-Man. He emphasized the creative freedom the team enjoyed in developing these characters, stating their intention to avoid duplicating Superman-esque abilities such as heat vision. "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that," Boon explained.
Boon also highlighted how the team drew inspiration from the characters' actions in their respective shows to craft unique Fatalities. He stressed that the core movesets and main attacks would significantly differentiate the two heroes, countering any assumptions that they might end up being too similar. "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters,'" Boon added.
