Nintendo App Reveals Release Date for Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie

by Ava Jun 28,2025

The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has officially set its release date: March 26, 2027. Nintendo confirmed this exciting news through its newly launched Nintendo Today! app—an all-in-one mobile platform designed to keep fans updated with the latest Nintendo news and events in real time.

This major reveal was delivered as a surprise during the Nintendo Direct presentation in March 2025 by none other than gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto, who introduced the app as part of a final surprise segment. The app functions as both a daily news hub and interactive calendar, offering players timely updates—like the Zelda movie announcement—as soon as they break.

For example, Miyamoto explained that after the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct broadcast, users will be able to access the app for comprehensive coverage and follow-up updates arriving “daily.” Notably, the Zelda movie’s official release date was first shared on the Nintendo Today! app before appearing on any of Nintendo's official social media platforms—a clear signal of how important this new channel will be for future announcements.

This partnership between Nintendo and Sony Pictures was originally revealed in November 2023, with renowned director Wes Ball (known for The Maze Runner series and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) helming the project. He is joined by producers Avi Arad and Shigeru Miyamoto, bringing together creative forces from both Hollywood and gaming worlds.

While plot details remain scarce, Wes Ball has offered tantalizing hints about his vision for the film. He describes it as aiming to be “live action Miyazaki,” drawing inspiration from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and his iconic Studio Ghibli films such as Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. Ball also emphasized that the film will be a grounded, serious take on the franchise without heavy reliance on motion capture, ensuring a more realistic cinematic experience.

As anticipation builds, fans are already engaging with the story behind the scenes. One early poll included in the Nintendo Today! app asks users:
Should Link be voiced in the new live-action Zelda movie?

  • [ ] Yes
  • [ ] No

Cast your vote and stay tuned for further updates as Nintendo continues to roll out exclusive content through the new app. With the release date now locked in and production underway, the journey to Hyrule is just beginning.
