MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game released in 2024, is set to shut down permanently very soon.
Player First Games confirmed back in January that Season 5 of MultiVersus would be its final season, announcing that the servers will be taken offline for good at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT) on May 30, 2025. The game is widely viewed as a significant misstep for Warner Bros. Discovery. During a November 2024 earnings call, the company acknowledged that MultiVersus performed substantially below expectations, leading to a $100 million write-down for its gaming division. This brought the total losses for the business to $300 million following the underwhelming release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier that January.
Just one month after that announcement, Warner Bros. revealed it was canceling its planned Wonder Woman title and closing three development studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games, the developer behind MultiVersus.
In a thread titled "Tomorrow MultiVersus shuts down, what are the final things you have to say about the game," hundreds of players shared their thoughts, reminiscing about their favorite in-game memories.
"MultiVersus was a dream come true. It was a platform fighter that emphasized fast-paced, offensive gameplay and featured 2v2 matches designed around team synergy," one fan wrote. "Beyond its core concept, the voice casting was outstanding. Many characters were voiced by their original actors, like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza as Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian. The character interactions during and after matches were also fantastic.
"While some roster picks and certain move designs were puzzling—such as the Banana Guard or Shaggy drawing from the 'Ultra Instinct Shaggy' meme—I have to admit that most of the movesets were incredibly creative. There will never be another game quite like MultiVersus."

"Nothing can compare to the excitement of playing the beta back in 2022. I was completely hooked on the game's fast-paced action," another player replied. "I even remember playing it nonstop when I was sick. I'll really miss it, and I hope it makes a comeback someday, whether through a sequel or a revival."
"This game will always hold a special place in my heart, right alongside PlayStation All-Stars," shared one fan nostalgically, while another commented, "Playing as Tom and Jerry was one of the most unique and enjoyable fighting game experiences I've ever had. It actually rekindled my love for the genre."

Some in the community are holding out hope, though most players recognize that the game is truly finished—especially considering the licensing complexities involved in any potential revival. Despite this, efforts are underway to preserve the game before the servers go offline.
"While MultiVersus may not become a staple at local multiplayer parties, its unique team-based combat makes it a standout online platform fighter," we noted in IGN's official MultiVersus review, where we scored it an 8.
