The possibility of Wind Waker HD being ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 remains a topic of interest among fans, especially following the announcement that the original GameCube version of Wind Waker will be available on the new console. Dive into the details to understand Nintendo's stance on this and the enhancements Wind Waker HD offers over the original.
Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming To Switch 2
During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was revealed that the GameCube version of Wind Waker would make its way to the Switch 2. This news sparked discussions about the potential for a Wind Waker HD port to the new console.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns in a conversation captured by Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9. Host Tim Gettys shared that during a Switch 2 press event in New York, he directly asked Bihldorff about the possibility of Wind Waker HD coming to the Switch 2, despite the GameCube version being available on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO). Bihldorff's response was clear: "No, all options are on the table." This statement leaves the door open for a potential HD port, though no definitive plans have been confirmed.
First Released in 2002
The original Wind Waker graced the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West. A significant update came a decade later with Wind Waker HD on the Wii U in 2013. This HD version boasted several enhancements, including upgraded visuals from 480p to HD, improved lighting, the addition of gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing mechanics, and various gameplay tweaks. With the GameCube library now exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD might be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this beloved title in its enhanced form.
Additionally, Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are being rebranded as Nintendo Classics. Members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon have access to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Nintendo Switch 2, with more titles slated for the future. These games will also feature options like a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
