Universal Pictures has reportedly tapped Joseph Kosinski to direct a new Miami Vice film, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Dan Gilroy, known for writing and directing Nightcrawler, has been brought on board to pen the screenplay. He'll be building upon an initial script draft by Eric Warren Singer, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick. Gilroy recently contributed to multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, created by his brother Tony Gilroy.
The original Miami Vice was a groundbreaking NBC police drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, airing from 1984 to 1989 across five seasons. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the series revolutionized television with its distinctive visual style, soundtrack, and atmosphere.
Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) previously adapted the series into a 2006 feature film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
While specific details remain scarce, it's clear this won't be Kosinski's immediate next project following his upcoming F1 film release this June. The director is known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy.
This timeline should give Kosinski ample opportunity to source the perfect Ferrari for production.
