Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in the HBO series Euphoria, The White Lotus, and the recent superhero film Madame Web, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to star in the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam. The project, which entered production in February, is a collaboration between Bandai Namco and Legendary, who have signed an agreement to co-finance the film.

The upcoming movie, yet to receive an official title, will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of Sweet Tooth. While specific plot details and a release date remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been unveiled to generate excitement among fans. The film is slated for a global theatrical release.

Variety broke the news about Sweeney's involvement in the Gundam project, though specifics about her character and the storyline are still undisclosed. Sweeney's recent projects include Reality, Anyone but You, and her role in the horror film inspired by a Reddit thread, which she is also set to produce.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their intention to gradually release more information as it becomes available. They highlighted the significance of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, which debuted in 1979 and revolutionized the 'real robot anime' genre. The series is renowned for its realistic portrayal of war, detailed scientific exploration, and complex human narratives, treating robots as 'mobile suits' or weapons, which sparked a massive cultural phenomenon.
