In a recent interview with TigerBelly, Stardew Valley creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone hinted at the possibility of a sequel, stating he may “eventually make a Stardew Valley 2.” However, he also made it clear that expanding the original game is far more appealing than starting from scratch.
“It’s so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch,” Barone explained. He elaborated on the development process, noting, “All the major systems are already done — that’s the stuff that’s not fun to do. When I make an update now, it’s like throwing in this or that — let’s add green rain, for example. These random, whimsical ideas.”
While a sequel remains a distant possibility, Barone emphasized that his current focus lies elsewhere. He admitted, “I didn’t want to just be the Stardew Valley guy,” which is part of the reason he’s been developing his next title, Haunted Chocolatier. That said, fans shouldn’t expect a release date anytime soon. Barone noted there's still a lot to be done, and he wants it to be something special: “It’s got to be better” than Stardew Valley.
Back in 2016, we praised Stardew Valley in our original review, giving it an 8.8/10 and calling it a standout entry in the farming simulator genre. By 2024, after years of continuous updates and improvements, we revisited the title and awarded it a perfect 10/10, declaring it a true “masterpiece.” Our review read: “Stardew Valley is not only the best farming game I’ve played — it is one of my favorite games of all time. The fact that myself and others keep returning to this eight-year-old gem every time it receives even the smallest update speaks volumes about its lasting brilliance and genre-defining impact.”
