Simu Liu Advocates for Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation

by Hannah May 25,2025

The film adaptation of the beloved video game Sleeping Dogs, which was officially canceled earlier this month, may have a glimmer of hope for revival, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for an adaptation of the 2012 game on X/Twitter, expressing his efforts to bring the project back to life. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, signaling his commitment to the project.

The journey of the Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has been turbulent. Initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen set to star, the project vanished from the radar a year later. Just a few weeks ago, Yen himself confirmed the film's cancellation. In his words, "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights. I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" This statement left fans disheartened, as all hope for a continuation of the Hong Kong-set action franchise seemed lost.

However, the unexpected reply from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu to a random social media post has reignited interest and hope. While it remains uncertain whether Liu will secure the rights or successfully get the film moving, his involvement has certainly sparked renewed enthusiasm among fans.

Sleeping Dogs was originally released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The game follows the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. Praised for its engaging narrative and immersive gameplay, Sleeping Dogs received an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Despite its critical acclaim, no sequels or follow-ups were produced, leaving fans eager for more content related to this captivating universe.
