First Look: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

by Leo May 22,2025

Nintendo has unveiled our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just weeks ahead of the console's eagerly anticipated launch next month. In a recent video released through the Nintendo Today app, we got a glimpse of the official Switch 2 carry case, which thoughtfully includes slots to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.

As previously announced, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, allowing the new console to utilize a single cartridge slot for games from both generations. However, there's a noticeable distinction: the color of the cartridge. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be consistent across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge showcased in the video. This red hue is complemented by a Switch 2 logo on the top of the cartridge's printed design sticker, differentiating it from the original Switch's design.

Despite the new color, Switch 2 cartridges remain largely identical to their predecessors, including the infamous foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to prevent accidental ingestion. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta explained to GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
