Just because The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 via the GameCube library doesn't mean fans won't see a full port of this beloved adventure game.
According to Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of product development, in an interview with Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys, the availability of a game on Nintendo Switch Online does not preclude the possibility of a remaster or remake. Despite the popularity of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess within the Zelda franchise, neither has been ported to the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Switch 2.
Some fans expressed concern that a full remaster might never happen, especially since *The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker*—previously ported to the Wii U in 2013—will soon be accessible through Nintendo's premium subscription service when the *Nintendo Switch 2 releases on June 5*.During a recent Q&A, Bihldorff responded to questions about the potential for a Wii U port on the Switch 2, stating, "All options are on the table." While nothing is confirmed, he noted that there are precedents of games available on Nintendo Switch Online being released in other formats, such as remakes or the same port version. He emphasized a "never say never" approach to future releases.
The announcement came during last week's Nintendo Direct, where it was revealed that GameCube titles are being added to the Nintendo Switch Online premium library. This update will allow subscribers to enjoy a range of classic 2000s-era games, including F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2, available at launch this summer, alongside The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The library is set to expand further with titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more in the coming years.
Last week also saw the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date delayed in the United States due to financial market disruptions caused by import tariffs, with Nintendo Canada following suit shortly after.
