by Anthony Jun 12,2025

June may still feel like a distant horizon for many Magic: The Gathering fans, especially those eagerly anticipating the arrival of the upcoming Final Fantasy-themed set. However, Wizards of the Coast has just dropped an exciting preview to help bridge the wait—revealing over a dozen brand-new cards from the set, along with some stunning art variations.

Among the newly unveiled cards are iconic characters from the world of Final Fantasy such as Sephiroth, Yuffie, Cecil, Garland, and Chaos. This sneak peek also includes updated visuals and alternate art versions for previously announced commander cards like Tidus, Cloud, Y’shtola, and Terra. In addition to these legendary figures, players get their first look at a new Food token design, as well as revamped art on cards including Stilzkin, Moogle Merchant; Sin, Spira’s Punishment; and Summon: Shiva, which you can view in the full image gallery below:

This latest reveal highlights some of the unique mechanics and design elements featured in the set. One of the most notable additions is the inclusion of Summons—an innovative twist on Magic's first-ever Saga creatures, allowing players to call upon powerful allies during gameplay (as seen with Summon: Shiva). Double-faced cards also make a triumphant return, exemplified by Cecil’s dual forms: Dark Knight and Redeemed Paladin.

The entire Final Fantasy set will boast more than 100 legendary creature cards, with 55 of them being borderless legends. Some of these feature artwork from beloved illustrators who have helped shape the visual legacy of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy will be a fully draftable set legal in the Standard format. It will launch alongside four preconstructed Commander decks, each themed around one of four major Final Fantasy titles: Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV. Each deck contains 100 cards, blending both original Final Fantasy-themed MTG cards and reimagined versions of existing cards with all-new Final Fantasy-inspired artwork.

The official release date for this highly anticipated crossover set is June 13.
