Hamill Rules Out Star Wars Return, Rejects Force Ghost Role

by Patrick Sep 15,2025

If fans were hoping Mark Hamill might reprise his iconic role as Luke Skywalker's Force ghost, think again. The veteran actor has definitively closed the door on returning to the legendary sci-fi saga, suggesting Star Wars needs to shift focus from legacy characters to forge new narratives.

During a ComicBook.com interview promoting his new film The Life of Chuck, Hamill was queried about potentially appearing as Luke's Force ghost in the upcoming Rey-centric Star Wars installment, New Jedi Order. His response couldn't have been clearer - that chapter ended when Luke left his Jedi robes behind in 2017's The Last Jedi.

Mark Hamill debuted as Luke Skywalker in 1977's revolutionary Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

"I'll always be grateful to George Lucas for bringing me into his vision back when Star Wars was just 'the most expensive B-movie ever made,'" Hamill reminisced.

"None of us imagined it would evolve into this cultural phenomenon spanning generations. But honestly? My time has passed. They've got so many exciting new characters to explore - that's where the energy should go."

"Besides," he added with characteristic humor, "my Force ghost would have to appear naked since Luke left his robes behind. Not exactly the heroic comeback fans deserve!"

Meanwhile, Daisy Ridley prepares to return as Rey in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order, which picks up fifteen years after the divisive The Rise of Skywalker as Rey attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order from scratch.

Details remain scarce, but Ridley teased to AlloCiné: "When I understood the story's direction, I knew immediately I had to be involved. It's pushing Star Wars into fresh creative territory while honoring what makes this universe special."

The Star Wars pipeline continues flowing with Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and Grogu slated for 2026 and Shawn Levy's Ryan Gosling-starring Starfighter arriving in 2027.
