"Ex-Rockstar Dev Urges GTA 4 Remaster: 'Niko Best GTA Protagonist'"

A former Rockstar veteran has weighed in on the swirling rumors about a potential re-release of *Grand Theft Auto IV* for the latest generation of consoles, suggesting that the game deserves a remaster. This chatter started with a leak from Tez2, a well-known source within the GTA community for sharing insider information. Tez2 hinted at the possibility of a *GTA IV* port arriving this year, suggesting that this might be linked to Rockstar's recent shutdown of a *GTA V* Liberty City mod.

However, it's crucial to note that Rockstar has not officially confirmed any plans to re-release *GTA IV*. Given their current focus on *GTA VI*, a *GTA IV* remaster would be unexpected. Yet, the conversation gained traction when Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who contributed to *GTA IV*, expressed his support for a remaster on social media. Vermeij, who worked at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009, emphasized the game's quality and mentioned recent successful remasters like *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered* as a positive precedent.

Vermeij praised *GTA IV's* protagonist, Niko Bellic, calling him "the best protagonist in any GTA game." He also speculated on how a remaster could be achieved, suggesting that Rockstar might port *GTA IV* to the latest version of their Rage engine.

Despite these discussions, Rockstar has given no indication of plans for a *GTA IV* remaster. Considering the monumental effort being put into *GTA VI*, set for a fall 2025 release, it seems unlikely that Rockstar would undertake a *GTA IV* project concurrently. Even outsourcing the port to another studio, as they did with *Red Dead Redemption*, wouldn't align well with the launch window of *GTA VI*.

Some fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of *GTA IV* and inspired by New York City, might appear in *GTA VI* either at launch or as post-launch DLC. *GTA VI* is set in the fictional state of Leonida, mirroring Florida and including Vice City, inspired by Miami.
