Michael Sarnoski, known for helming A Quiet Place: Day One, is set to write and direct the live-action film adaptation of Kojima Productions' Death Stranding.
According to Deadline, Sarnoski will lead the Death Stranding project, with A24 and Kojima Productions producing alongside Square Peg. Sarnoski previously wrote and directed the A Quiet Place spin-off Day One and the 2021 film Pig, featuring Nicolas Cage. He is also the writer and director for the upcoming A24 project The Death of Robin Hood.
Limited details have been shared about the live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. The 2019 game follows players navigating a fractured America during an extinction-level crisis, facing eerie creatures and bizarre phenomena. Its cinematic storytelling, shaped by Hideo Kojima, makes it a strong candidate for a film.
The original Death Stranding game boasted a high-profile cast, including Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges, alongside Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. It remains to be seen whether these actors will return for the film adaptation.
Meanwhile, Death Stranding continues to expand, with Kojima Productions announcing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set for release on June 26, 2025, on PlayStation 5. The sequel introduces new talent, including Luca Marinelli and Elle Fanning.
With its star power and cinematic foundation, Death Stranding is well-positioned for a successful transition to the big screen, even as other Kojima-related projects, like the Metal Gear Solid film, face slower progress.
