Absolute Batman's Counterpart: Is Absolute Joker Next?

by Allison May 20,2025

The launch of **Absolute Batman** has been one of DC's most significant comic book releases in years. The inaugural issue soared to become the best-selling comic of 2024, and the series has consistently topped the sales charts ever since. This enthusiastic reception underscores the appeal of this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

With the completion of the first story arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta recently sat down with IGN to delve into how Absolute Batman reimagines the classic Batman mythos. They discussed the design of this impressively muscular Batman, the impact of having a living mother for Bruce Wayne, and teased the looming threat of the Absolute Joker.

The Absolute Universe's Batman is a formidable figure, characterized by his bulging muscles, shoulder spikes, and various enhancements to the traditional Batsuit. This design earned a spot on our list of the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta explained how they conceptualized this larger-than-life Dark Knight, emphasizing the need for a Batman who lacks the wealth and resources of his traditional counterpart.

"Scott's initial vision was to make him larger than life," Dragotta shared with IGN. "He wanted Batman to be the biggest we've seen, and when I first drew him large, Scott encouraged me to go even bigger, almost to Hulk-like proportions."

Dragotta elaborated, "The design was driven by the need to make him bold, iconic, and reflective of his character. Every element of his suit, down to the emblem, is a weapon. It's not just a utility belt; the entire suit is a utility. This approach will continue to evolve and shape his design in future issues."

Snyder added that without the financial resources to intimidate Gotham's criminal underworld, this Batman relies on his physical presence. "The classic Batman's superpower is his wealth," Snyder said. "But in this universe, his size, physicality, and the utility of every piece of his suit become his tools of intimidation. He's a force of nature against villains who believe they're untouchable."

The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident, particularly in a striking splash page in issue #6 that pays homage to Miller's iconic cover, featuring Batman leaping against a backdrop of lightning.

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman significantly alters the Dark Knight's mythology, most notably by revealing that Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha, is alive. This change transforms Batman from a solitary figure into someone with much to lose.

"It was a decision I debated a lot," Snyder admitted. "Having Martha alive felt more interesting than revisiting Thomas's influence. As we explored her role, she became the moral compass of the series. Bruce, though a moral force himself, is still young and idealistic. Martha's presence adds a new dimension to his character, making him both stronger and more vulnerable."

Another key change introduced in issue #1 is Bruce's childhood friendships with characters like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle, who are part of Batman's rogues gallery in the traditional DCU. Here, they form an extended family, influencing Bruce's journey to becoming Batman.

"The idea was to explore how Bruce would learn to be Batman without global training," Snyder explained. "He learns the city's underworld from Oswald, fighting from Waylon, high-level detection from Edward, and the city's politics from Harvey. His relationships with these characters and his mother are central to the series."

Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask

In "The Zoo," Absolute Batman asserts his presence as a new generation of costumed villains emerges. The arc focuses on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, the nihilistic leader of the Party Animals. Snyder and Dragotta considered introducing a new villain but chose to revamp Black Mask to fit their narrative.

"We wanted a villain who embodied nihilism," Snyder said. "Black Mask's aesthetic fit perfectly with our vision of a world beyond saving, where hedonism reigns. We treated him like a creator-owned character, staying true to his core as a crime boss while making him fresh and our own."

The confrontation between Batman and Black Mask in issue #6 culminates in a brutal fight on Sionis' yacht, where Batman, while not killing Sionis, leaves him severely injured. This battle underscores Batman's underdog status in the Absolute Universe, where he's underestimated but determined.

The Threat of Absolute Joker

The series hints at a looming confrontation with the Absolute Joker, introduced at the end of issue #1 as Batman's wealthy, worldly, and humorless counterpart. "The Zoo" concludes with a chilling scene of Joker, surrounded by a cocoon of dead babies, ordering Bane to deal with Batman.

"The Joker represents the system in this inverted universe, where Batman is the disruptor," Snyder explained. "Their dynamic is always at the opposite ends of the spectrum. This Joker is terrifying even before meeting Batman, and their relationship will evolve as the series progresses."

Dragotta added, "This Joker has been established as powerful, with hints like JK Industries and the global Arks. His storyline is coming, and we want readers to be intrigued by the mystery we've planted."

What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane

Issues #7 and #8 introduce Mr. Freeze, with Marcos Martin stepping in for a short arc that promises a darker, more horror-infused take on the villain. "Mr. Freeze's story parallels Bruce's struggles," Snyder said. "He's taken a dark path, and our version is very twisted."

Regarding Bane, Snyder teased, "He's really big. We wanted someone who would make Bruce's silhouette look smaller."

The larger Absolute line, including Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman, launched in 2024, with new titles like Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter set for 2025. Snyder hinted at future interactions between the characters.

"You'll see hints of Bruce being aware of events in other parts of the Absolute Universe," Snyder said. "We're planning how these characters will interact in 2025 and beyond, focusing on how they and the villains affect each other in this world."
