Zenless Zone Zero: Best Characters Ranked

by Eric Feb 02,2025

This Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) tier list ranks all 1.0 characters, updated December 24, 2024, to reflect the current meta. Tier rankings are subject to change with new character releases and meta shifts. For example, while Grace was initially a top performer, the introduction of powerful Anomaly units like Miyabi has diminished her relevance.

HoYoverse's ZZZ boasts a diverse and unique character roster, each with distinct mechanics and synergistic potential. This tier list aims to identify the strongest characters based on current gameplay.

S-Tier

S-Tier characters excel in their roles and synergize effectively within teams.

  • Miyabi: Miyabi's swift Frost attacks and substantial damage output make her a top contender. While requiring strategic play, mastering her abilities enables devastating battlefield performance.

  • Jane Doe: A superior alternative to Piper, Jane Doe's critical hit potential on Assault Anomalies delivers significantly higher damage. Despite Anomaly's inherent slower pace, her potent Assault capabilities earn her an S-rank alongside Zhu Yuan and Ellen.

  • Yanagi: Yanagi specializes in triggering Disorder, activating the effect without needing Shock alongside another Anomaly. Her ability to trigger Disorder on Anomaly-affected enemies makes her an ideal partner for Miyabi.

  • Zhu Yuan: An exceptional DPS, Zhu Yuan's rapid Shotshell damage is highly effective with Stun and Support characters. In version 1.1, her optimal teammates are Qingyi (for quick stuns) and Nicole (for Ether damage boosts and DEF reduction).

  • Caesar: Caesar epitomizes a robust Defensive Agent, providing exceptional protection, significant buffs, and debuffs. Her Impact scaling facilitates easy enemy stuns, and her crowd control capabilities further enhance her value.

  • Qingyi: A versatile Stunner effective in any squad with an Attack Agent. Her fluid movements and rapid Daze buildup, coupled with a substantial DMG multiplier against stunned enemies, surpass Lycaon and Koleda in many scenarios (though Lycaon remains superior in Ellen teams due to his Ice-specific effects).

  • Lighter: A Stun Agent with significant buffs, Lighter synergizes exceptionally well with Fire and Ice characters, placing him high on the tier list due to the strength of these attribute units.

  • Lycaon: An Ice-based Stun character, Lycaon relies on charged attacks to apply Ice and Daze, crucial for Anomaly reactions. His ability to reduce Ice resistance and boost ally Daze DMG makes him essential for Ice teams.

  • Ellen: An Attack Agent utilizing Ice damage, Ellen's synergy with Lycaon and Soukaku is a key factor in her high ranking. After Lycaon's stuns and Soukaku's buffs, Ellen delivers powerful hits, particularly with her EX Special Attacks and Ultimates.

  • Harumasa: Initially a free character, Harumasa is an Electric-Attack Agent whose powerful hits require specific build-up.

  • Soukaku: A supportive buffer who applies Ice Anomaly and enhances Ice units like Ellen and Lycaon, making her a top-tier buffer.

  • Rina: A Support Agent dealing considerable damage while granting allies PEN (defense ignore). Her high damage stems from sharing PEN with allies, emphasizing PEN Ratio builds. She also excels at building Shock Anomaly and buffing Shock reactions, benefiting Electric characters.

A-Tier

A-Tier characters are strong in specific team compositions but generally fulfill their roles well.

  • Nicole: An Ether Support, Nicole pulls enemies into energy fields (beneficial for AoE units like Nekomata), shreds enemy DEF, and increases team Ether DMG. However, her effectiveness is primarily limited to Ether DPS units.

  • Seth: A capable shielder and support, but not as impactful as top-tier buffers like Soukaku and Caesar. His niche focus on Anomaly DPS contrasts with the broader benefits of ATK buffers for Anomaly teams.

  • Lucy: A Support unit providing off-field DMG and an ATK% buff. Her DPS increases with synergistic character pairings.

  • Piper: While her kit centers around her EX Special Attack, it's highly effective. Her sustained Assault Anomaly generation works well with other Anomaly units to consistently trigger Disorder.

  • Grace: Grace excels at rapidly building Anomaly on enemies, triggering continuous damage. Her synergy with other Anomaly builders is strong, but the influx of new Anomaly Agents has lessened her overall impact.

  • Koleda: A reliable Fire/Stun character, Koleda quickly builds enemy Daze and synergizes well with other Fire characters. Her synergy with Ben extends beyond stats, adding new movesets.

  • Anby: A reliable Stun unit with quick and effective combos. Her ability to deflect bullets adds utility, but her susceptibility to interruption holds her back compared to other Stun Agents.

  • Soldier 11: A straightforward high-damage dealer whose Basic Attacks become infused with Fire during specific attacks.

B-Tier

B-Tier characters offer some utility, but other characters perform these roles better.

  • Ben: The only defensive character in ZZZ 1.0, Ben is fun due to his parry and punish mechanics and his synergy with Koleda. However, his slow combat speed and limited team benefits restrict his overall value.

  • Nekomata: Nekomata deals significant AoE damage but relies heavily on team support, currently struggling to find optimal teammates due to her Element and Faction.

C-Tier

C-Tier characters currently offer limited value.

  • Corin: A Physical Attack character whose damage excels against stunned enemies during extended slashes. However, Nekomata and Piper provide superior Physical Attack options.

  • Billy: While dealing some damage, Billy's DPS is outmatched by other Attack characters, even Physical ones.

  • Anton: Despite his interesting Core Skill, Anton lacks DPS and is a single-target unit, limiting his combat effectiveness.

This tier list provides a snapshot of character performance. Future updates and new content may significantly alter these rankings.
