Obsidian's CEO Expresses Confidence in The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed
Positive Outlook for Obsidian's Upcoming RPGs
According to Urquhart, development on The Outer Worlds 2 is progressing smoothly. He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original title, highlighting their expertise and commitment.
In a YouTube interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart acknowledged past challenges. The studio faced significant pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic and following its acquisition by Microsoft. Simultaneous development of multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, stretched resources. Urquhart candidly admitted a period of intense pressure, even mentioning discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus solely on Avowed. However, the studio persevered, ultimately continuing development across all projects.
"We were acquired [in 2018], then navigated the acquisition process, faced the COVID-19 pandemic, and simultaneously worked on completing Outer Worlds, its DLC, advancing Avowed, restarting Outer Worlds 2, progressing Grounded, and Josh working on Pentiment," Urquhart recalled.
Urquhart emphasized the successful outcomes of Grounded and Pentiment, and expressed confidence in the progress of both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, describing the latter as "looking incredible." While specifics on game content remain undisclosed, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. Despite this, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games. "We'll deliver all these games," he stated. "Will they meet our initial timelines? No. But we'll get there, and that's been proven." Both titles are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
