Nintendo's Anti-Piracy Crackdown Bricks Used Switch Consoles

by Anthony Dec 18,2025

Gamers are cautioning others about Nintendo's stricter anti-piracy measures when purchasing pre-owned Switch 2 consoles – warning they might unknowingly buy a permanently offline device.

Recent reports suggest Nintendo has started permanently blocking online access for Switch 2 units that have used the controversial MIG Switch flash card, a tool enabling unauthorized game copies.

This irreversible ban manifests through error code 2124-4508 when attempting any online functions. Affected consoles lose access to digital downloads, system updates, multiplayer features, GameChat, and all Nintendo Switch Online services including its classic game libraries.

The first documented case has already emerged of a shopper purchasing what appeared to be a discounted Switch 2 at Walmart, only to discover they'd acquired a banned console.

Reddit user Bimmytung shared their experience: "Though everything looked physically intact, I noticed the Mario Kart redemption code was scratched off. The $50 discount seemed worth the risk – until I encountered error code 2124-4508 during setup. Thankfully, Walmart processed my return hassle-free."

As awareness spreads about MIG Switch-related bans, consumers are advised to verify online functionality before purchasing used Switch 2 consoles. Experts recommend requesting proof of clean online access and assurances about previous owners' compliance with Nintendo's policies.

Nintendo reinforced its stance in May through updated Nintendo Account Agreements, stating any "unauthorized hardware or software usage" could render devices "permanently unusable" for online services.

The immediate enforcement has surprised some Switch 2 owners, with bans issued shortly after MIG Switch detection. While Nintendo hasn't publicly commented on these specific cases or provided solutions for impacted secondary market purchases, consumers are urged to exercise heightened caution when buying used systems.
