"Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards to Feature Download Keys"

by Jack May 13,2025

Nintendo has unveiled a new approach to physical game distribution with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in June. In a customer support post following the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the company clarified that the new Switch 2 game cards may not always contain the actual game data. Instead, some will function as game-key cards, which include a key for downloading the game rather than the game itself. This means that upon inserting the card into your Switch 2, you'll need an internet connection to download the game.

To help consumers make informed decisions, Nintendo will clearly label game-key card cases on the front lower portion of the box. This ensures that buyers are aware of what they're purchasing. The introduction of these game-key cards has sparked discussions among physical gaming enthusiasts who value the traditional plug-and-play experience without the need for downloads and internet connectivity.

While some fans worry that game-key cards might eventually replace all physical cartridges, current evidence suggests otherwise. Early glimpses of Switch 2 box art show that games like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster will use game-key cards, while others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will not. It seems likely that game-key cards will be used primarily for larger games that could benefit from this method, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will ship with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2's launch day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the new red game cards, which boast faster data reading speeds compared to the original Switch cartridges. This emphasis on improved technology suggests that not all Switch 2 games will adopt the game-key card system. Nintendo's previous use of cartridges requiring additional downloads, such as with LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch, shows their willingness to adapt game card functionalities.

As the launch date of June 5, 2025, approaches, more details about the extent of game-key card usage will emerge. For a comprehensive overview of everything revealed in today's Direct, you can click here. To explore the new technology features of the Nintendo Switch 2, click here.
