Minecraft marked its 15th anniversary last year, and despite reaching its teenage years, developer Mojang has no plans to release a sequel. During a visit to their Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the possibility of a sequel to the best-selling game. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded humorously yet firmly: "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."
While a Minecraft 2.0 isn't on the cards, the survival-crafting game is set to continue evolving. Mojang aims to double its current lifespan, with plans stretching well into the future. "We've existed for 15 years," Garneij stated. "We want to exist at least 15 more years, so Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I work as a team to set the vision and strategy for our game and explore what we can do beyond that."
This ambition is driven by Mojang's commitment to innovation, building on their established foundations. However, Garneij acknowledged that these foundations are showing their age. While there are no plans for an engine overhaul, implementing new content, such as the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update, takes time.
"The age of the game is a challenge," Garneij explained. "It's a 15-year-old platform, with 15-year-old technology that slows us down. New games with modern engines can run much faster. So, I would say the technology and our age are our biggest challenges."
Despite these challenges, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games and shows no signs of slowing down. There are no plans for Minecraft to become free-to-play or to incorporate generative AI technology. So, while you won't be playing Minecraft 2 anytime soon, the game's future looks bright.
