Sony's Killzone franchise has remained inactive for years. In a recent interview, Killzone composer Joris de Man has voiced his hope for the series' revival alongside many fans.
Speaking with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man shared his wish to see previous Killzone titles make a comeback.
"I'm aware fans have started petitions," de Man stated. "It's complicated though—I'm not speaking for Guerrilla here... I can't predict if it'll happen. Personally, I'd love to see it return since it's such an iconic series, but any revival would need to consider current player preferences since the games deliver quite a grim atmosphere."
The potential format for Killzone's return remains open to interpretation. De Man suggested remastered editions might initially find more success than entirely new installments.
"A remastered collection could perform well—I'm less certain about a completely new game," de Man explained. "It's unclear whether audiences still want this style of game. Nowadays players often prefer quicker, more accessible experiences."
Compared to fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty, Killzone games favored deliberate, heavy combat mechanics. Killzone 2 became particularly notorious for its perceived input delay on PlayStation 3, creating complaints about sluggish responsiveness. Visually and thematically, the series embraced dark, oppressive atmospheres with gritty wartime aesthetics.
Recent comments from Guerrilla Games in a Washington Post interview suggested the studio has shifted focus entirely to its Horizon series, seemingly moving beyond Killzone.
Despite this, over a decade has passed since Killzone Shadow Fall's release, leaving nostalgic fans hopeful for either Killzone's return or revival of other classic PlayStation shooter franchises. While nothing is confirmed, supporters can at least take comfort knowing influential figures like de Man share their sentiment.
