Imagine your gaming mouse suddenly catching fire while your PC is in sleep mode. This shocking scenario is exactly what happened to Reddit user lommelinn, who narrowly avoided a disaster when their Gigabyte M6880X mouse burst into flames on their desk. The incident, which occurred early one morning, filled the room with black smoke and left lommelinn's apartment in a mess, with black particles covering everything, including their modular synth.
Sharing their harrowing experience on Reddit, lommelinn detailed how they were alerted by the smell of smoke and rushed to find their wired, optical Gigabyte mouse engulfed in flames. Despite quickly extinguishing the fire, lommelinn inhaled a significant amount of smoke. The mouse, a seemingly ordinary wired gaming mouse powered via USB 2.0 with a modest 5V at 0.5A, unexpectedly suffered a catastrophic failure that left many puzzled.
Photographic evidence posted by lommelinn showed the extent of the damage. The top rear panel of the mouse had completely melted away, while the underside remained relatively intact. The reasons behind this selective damage remain unclear. Additionally, the images revealed a melted section of the user's desk and mousepad, highlighting the severity of the incident.
