The Sega Master System, a classic 8-bit console, boasts a library of fantastic titles, including unique versions and exclusives. This guide shows you how to easily play these games on your Steam Deck using EmuDeck.

Before You Begin:

  • Power Up: Ensure your Steam Deck is fully charged or connected to power.
  • Storage: A high-speed microSD card (recommended) or external HDD is needed. Note that an external HDD will reduce portability.
  • Input: A keyboard and mouse are highly recommended for easier navigation. If unavailable, use the on-screen keyboard (Steam + X buttons) and trackpads.

1. Enable Developer Mode:

Essential for smooth emulator operation.

  • Access the Steam menu, then System > System Settings.
  • Enable Developer Mode.
  • Access the Developer menu (bottom of the left panel).
  • Enable CEF Remote Debugging (check after updates!).
  • Restart your Steam Deck.

2. Installing EmuDeck (Desktop Mode):

  • Switch to Desktop Mode (Steam button > Power > Desktop Mode).
  • Download EmuDeck from your browser. Choose the correct SteamOS version.
  • Run the installer and select Custom Install.
  • Select your SD card (rename it "Primary" for easier access).
  • Choose your desired emulators (at least RetroArch for Sega Master System).
  • Enable "Configure CRT Shader for Classic 3D Games" (optional).
  • Complete the installation.

3. Transferring Sega Master System ROMs:

  • Open Dolphin File Manager.
  • Navigate to Removable Devices > Primary > Emulation > ROMS > mastersystem.
  • Copy your Sega Master System ROMs (.sms files) into this folder.

4. Adding Games to Your Steam Library:

  • Open EmuDeck in Desktop Mode.
  • Launch Steam ROM Manager (SRM).
  • Disable Parsers, then select Sega Master System.
  • Choose "Add Games" and "Parse."
  • Verify game and artwork display, then "Save to Steam."

5. Fixing or Uploading Missing Artwork:

  • Use SRM's "Fix" option to automatically find artwork.
  • If needed, use "Upload" to manually add artwork from your Steam Deck's Pictures folder.

6. Playing Your Games (Gaming Mode):

  • Switch to Gaming Mode.
  • Open your Steam Library.
  • Access your Sega Master System collection.
  • Select a game and play!

7. Enhancing Performance:

  • In-game (QAM button), access the Performance menu.
  • Enable "Use game profile."
  • Set Frame Limit to 60 FPS.
  • Enable Half Rate Shading.

8. Installing Decky Loader:

  • Switch to Desktop Mode.
  • Download Decky Loader from its GitHub page.
  • Run the installer and choose Recommended Install.
  • Restart your Steam Deck in Gaming Mode.

9. Installing and Configuring Power Tools:

  • Access Decky Loader via the QAM button.
  • Install the Power Tools plugin from the Decky Store.
  • Configure Power Tools (disable SMTs, set Threads to 4).
  • Access the Performance menu (QAM > battery icon).
  • Enable Advanced View, Manual GPU Clock Control, and set GPU Clock Frequency to 1200.
  • Save per-game profiles.

10. Fixing Decky Loader After a Steam Deck Update:

  • Switch to Desktop Mode.
  • Re-download and run the Decky Loader installer (select "Execute").
  • Enter your pseudo password (create one if necessary).
  • Restart your Steam Deck in Gaming Mode.
