Netflix is developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, sources confirm.
According to Deadline, the project, set in the iconic Forgotten Realms, involves director Shawn Levy of Deadpool & Wolverine fame, writer-showrunner Drew Crevello of WeCrashed, and Hasbro.
The Forgotten Realms, the beloved fantasy world of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, served as the backdrop for the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Larian Studios’ hit video game Baldur’s Gate 3.
Deadline describes this “potential” adaptation as one of Netflix’s most ambitious fantasy TV projects to date. Crevello has penned the pilot and will serve as showrunner, though Netflix and Hasbro have yet to comment officially.
“Following extensive negotiations, typical for such a high-profile IP, the fantasy series is now advancing at Netflix for further development,” reported Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva. “If successful, it could kickstart a broader Dungeons & Dragons universe.”
The prospects for this Dungeons & Dragons live-action series appear strong, but there’s no update on a sequel to the fan-favorite Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which struggled at the box office for Paramount Pictures.
In November 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine expressed enthusiasm for a sequel, stating he was “pretty confident” it would move forward, though no further developments have been announced.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins indicated openness to another Dungeons & Dragons film, provided it could be produced on a reduced budget. “We need to find a way to make it more cost-effectively,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s Secret Level anthology series featured a Dungeons & Dragons animated segment.
