James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's actively scripting his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's clearly incredibly busy.
While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his current project – likely keeping details under wraps until after Superman's July release – we've considered potential candidates for his next undertaking. Which franchises and characters best align with his unique style? What films should take precedence as Gunn and Peter Safran construct this new shared universe? Here are our suggestions for Gunn's next DC film:

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Despite Batman's extensive cinematic history, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates considerable anticipation. This film will reboot Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike recent iterations, it will emphasize the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.
However, The Brave and the Bold faces uncertainties. Development seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's directorial involvement remains questionable. The challenge of introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's version adds complexity.
The DCU needs a compelling Batman. If Muschietti departs, Gunn's involvement could ensure the project's success (a possibility already under consideration). Gunn's expertise in portraying emotional father-son dynamics (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) makes him an ideal choice for Bruce and Damian's story.
The Flash
The Flash is crucial to any DC Universe, a Justice League cornerstone and a multiverse linchpin. However, the character's live-action history is uneven. While The CW series showcased an effective ensemble (despite its later decline), Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal and the film's box office failure left the character tarnished.
The Flash needs a fresh approach, avoiding overused storylines like Flashpoint. The film should focus on Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing the titular hero.
Gunn's knack for dynamic action and relatable characters would benefit a Flash film immensely.
The Authority
Gunn openly discussed the challenges of adapting The Authority, noting difficulties in finding a unique angle that avoids overlap with The Boys and similar projects.
The Authority is vital to the expanding DCU, initially announced alongside other projects, with María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appearing in Superman. The clash between the optimism of heroes like Superman and the cynicism of The Authority is a key narrative element.
Gunn's ability to work with unconventional heroes and create engaging team dynamics makes him a suitable director.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
Gunn acknowledged setbacks for the planned Waller series, citing scheduling conflicts with Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As these commitments lessen, prioritizing Waller, potentially as a feature film, could be beneficial.
Waller and ARGUS are crucial to the DCU's foundation, appearing in Superman and Peacemaker. Focusing on this element and its central figure makes narrative sense. A film format might be preferable to a series.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman fell short of expectations, despite its potential. Audiences desired a more collaborative and less brooding portrayal of the two heroes.
Gunn could excel at a team-up film showcasing their friendship and combined strength against formidable threats. A Gunn-directed Batman/Superman film would be a reliable success for the growing DCU.
Titans
The Teen Titans boast a vast fanbase and rich comic book history. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated the characters' live-action potential.
A Titans film offers a compelling alternative to a Justice League film. Their family dynamic differs from the League's, aligning with Gunn's success in transforming the Guardians.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, suggests a supernatural focus. Establishing a magical Justice League counterpart is logical.
Justice League Dark offers opportunities for showcasing characters like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine. Their inherent dysfunction aligns with Gunn's storytelling style. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could broaden the film's appeal.
