Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game's Identity
Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his dream crossover collaborations for the game, sparking excitement among fans. His wish list includes iconic franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, Warhammer 40,000, and even Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and Blade Runner. The initial conversation began with a playful exchange on Twitter regarding a potential collaboration with the tabletop game, Trench Crusade.
While Pilestedt acknowledges the appeal of such collaborations, particularly in the context of the popular crossover trend in live-service games, he emphasizes the potential risks. He believes that incorporating too many crossovers could dilute Helldivers 2's unique satirical, militaristic identity, ultimately creating an experience that feels less like Helldivers.
He's open to both large and small crossover elements, such as individual weapons or character skins acquired through in-game currency (Warbonds), but stresses these are personal preferences, and no decisions have been finalized. This cautious approach contrasts with the trend of some live-service games overloading on crossover content that sometimes clashes with the game's original setting.
The ultimate decision rests with Arrowhead Studios. While the potential for seamless integration of certain franchises into Helldivers 2's satirical tone is intriguing, the developers are prioritizing the preservation of the game's cohesive universe. The possibility of Super Earth soldiers battling Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator remains a fun, albeit currently hypothetical, scenario.
