The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some much-needed clarification. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads sheds some light on the upcoming title.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel is a direct continuation of the original game's storyline. Addressing speculation surrounding the trailer shown at the Game Awards, director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder...", while Hirabayashi definitively confirmed that the celestial deity Amaterasu is indeed the main protagonist.
The interview also addressed the previous Ōkami title, Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS game featuring Amaterasu's offspring, Chibiterasu. While acknowledging the game's existence and the mixed reception it received, Hirabayashi emphasized that the new sequel serves as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami narrative, effectively sidestepping the events of Ōkamiden.
The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and a companion embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflicts and challenges.
However, fans eager for more concrete details will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the premature announcement stemmed from their excitement. According to Hirabayashi, substantial updates are unlikely for some time.
