Spectre Divide Backlash Prompts Skin Prices to Lower Soon After Launch

Following significant player backlash, Spectre Divide developer Mountaintop Studios swiftly adjusted in-game skin and bundle pricing just hours after the online FPS title's launch. This article details the studio's response and the ongoing player reaction.

Spectre Divide Cuts Skin Prices After Player Outcry

30% SP Refund for Early Purchasers

Mountaintop Studios announced price reductions of 17-25% across in-game weapons and character skins, a decision directly attributed to negative player feedback regarding initial pricing. Game director Lee Horn confirmed the changes. The studio's statement acknowledged player concerns: "We've heard your feedback and are making changes. Weapons & Outfits will see permanent price decreases of 17-25%. Players who purchased items beforehand will receive a 30% SP [in-game currency] refund."

The price adjustments followed a wave of criticism targeting the high cost of skins and bundles, particularly the Cryo Kinesis Masterpiece bundle's initial $85 (9,000 SP) price tag—deemed excessive for a free-to-play game by many.

The 30% SP refund (rounded up to the nearest 100 SP) applies to pre-reduction purchases. However, the Starter pack, Sponsors, and Endorsement upgrades remain unaffected. Mountaintop Studios clarified that "these packs will not be adjusted; however, Founder's Pack/Supporter Pack purchasers of these items will receive the extra SP added to their account."

While some players welcomed the price reduction, the overall response remains mixed, mirroring the game's 49% negative Steam rating at the time of writing. Negative reviews flooded Steam, pushing the game's overall rating to "Mixed." Social media reactions were diverse. One player on Twitter (X) commented, "Not quite enough, but a good start! It's great you're listening to feedback." Another suggested, "Allowing individual item purchases from packs (hairstyles, accessories) might increase revenue."

Conversely, skepticism persists. One player criticized the timing of the price adjustment, stating, "This should have been done beforehand, not as a reaction to player anger. This approach might jeopardize the game's long-term success, especially with upcoming competition from other free-to-play titles."
