Starting a new character in *Stardew Valley* grants you the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farming journey. While initially limited to one pet per save file, the 1.6 update opened up the possibility of welcoming more pets into your home.

To unlock the option for additional pets, you must first max out the friendship level with your current pet. This involves ensuring their water bowl is filled daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when nature does the job for you.

Additionally, petting your companion once a day by interacting with them will contribute to their happiness, indicated by a heart bubble appearing over their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship meter through the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a letter from Marnie, inviting you to adopt more pets available at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the invitation at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, your next step is to ensure they have a comfortable home on your farm. Visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each new pet. These bowls not only provide a water source but also serve as a home base for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting their bowls for too long could result in your pets running away, a costly mistake both emotionally and financially.

Pet Bowls are available under the "Construct Farm Buildings" menu at Robin's shop, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood each. It's advisable to buy these before adopting your new pets to maintain a high friendship level from the start.
