In Project Zomboid, traversing the expansive map on foot is impractical, except perhaps for a challenge. Fortunately, many cars are drivable, and if keys are unavailable, hotwiring is an option. It's simpler than it sounds; a few button presses often suffice, but certain prerequisites must be met. While not requiring a top-tier build, these requirements are crucial.
Hotwiring in Project Zomboid
Successful hotwiring allows driving a vehicle as long as it has fuel and is in good condition, even without the correct keys. However, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
After meeting the requirements, follow these steps on any functioning vehicle. Hotwiring is automatic; once complete, press W to start the engine. Note that fuel levels vary, so acquiring gasoline is advisable.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills
For non-Burglar characters, increase Electrical and Mechanics skills through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Disassemble electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts, found in homes, shops, mailboxes, sheds, and on bookshelves. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP.
Screwdrivers or appropriate tools are needed for disassembly/installation. Right-clicking a vehicle part and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
