Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead! Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power behind the camera, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao ( Nomadland, Eternals) is in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
While Whedon oversaw the original series and its film predecessor, he faced accusations of fostering a toxic work environment during production.
Plot details remain scarce beyond the central focus on a new Slayer and Gellar's potential return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to battle supernatural forces, aided by her friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), spawning the spin-off Angel and continuing its story through comic books.
