Avowed's Companions: A Ranked Guide from Worst to Best

Beyond their narrative roles and dialogue, Avowed's Companions offer significant gameplay advantages, from pathfinding to combat prowess. This guide ranks each Companion from least to most effective.

  1. Marius

Marius in Avowed

Early game utility is Marius's strongest suit. His passive abilities aid exploration, revealing items and plants. However, his combat capabilities quickly become underwhelming as other Companions join your party. His abilities primarily focus on crowd control and weakening enemies, making him a niche choice, particularly effective against melee foes with low health. While potentially useful for melee-focused Envoys in specific situations, he lacks the overall power to justify inclusion throughout most of the Living Lands.

Marius' Abilities and Upgrades:

  • Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgradeable to stun, trap multiple, and inflict Bleed).
  • Heart Seeker: Piercing shot (upgradeable for multi-target, increased damage vs. low health, and reduced cooldown).
  • Shadow Step: Vanishes and strikes (upgradeable for instant kills on stunned enemies, increased damage vs. low health, and increased target count).
  • Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed (upgradeable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow enemies, and further reduce damage).
  1. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-oriented Animancer, excels at healing, shielding, and buffing the party. While lacking in raw damage, her utility is invaluable during challenging encounters, such as boss fights. Her ability to power Essence Generators also unlocks late-game areas and loot. She synergizes exceptionally well with magic-focused, Wizard Envoys.

Giatta's Abilities:

  • Purification: Heals allies (upgradeable for increased healing, enemy interruption, and increased ally damage reduction).
  • Barrier: Provides temporary health to allies (upgradeable for increased temporary health, healing on expiration, and self-protection).
  • Acceleration: Increases ally movement and attack speed (upgradeable for damage reduction, extended duration, and ability cooldown reduction).
  • Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks (upgradeable for increased healing for low-health allies, temporary health at max health, and ally revival on enemy kill).
  1. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Despite being an early recruit, Kai remains a valuable asset throughout the entire game. This tanky Companion delivers consistent damage with minimal player intervention. His self-revival ability further enhances his effectiveness. He also possesses utility outside of combat, using fire to clear obstacles like spiderwebs and roots.

Kai's Abilities and Upgrades:

  • Fire and Ire: Blunderbuss shot with stun and taunt (upgradeable for ignition, increased stun, and cooldown reduction).
  • Unbending Defense: Health regeneration and damage reduction (upgradeable for increased damage reduction, increased regeneration, and a damaging shockwave on expiration).
  • Leap of Daring: Stunning and taunting area-of-effect attack (upgradeable for increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, and bonus attack damage per hit).
  • Second Wind: Self-revival (upgradeable for increased health restoration, attack speed boost, and ability cooldown reset).
  1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, boasts high damage output and exceptional crowd control. Her abilities provide a form of "air support" in the Living Lands. She also offers environmental utility, clearing obstacles to access new areas. Despite being the last Companion acquired, she's arguably the most valuable throughout the remainder of the journey.

Yatzli's Abilities and Upgrades:

  • Essence Explosion: Explosive arcane damage (upgradeable for increased blast radius, fire accumulation, and cooldown reduction).
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Volley of homing missiles (upgradeable for increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation).
  • Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgradeable for increased slow, area-of-effect, and frost accumulation).
  • Blast: Area-of-effect attack on hit (upgradeable for explosive damage, obstacle destruction, frozen enemy shattering, increased stun, and status effect chances).

Avowed releases on PC and Xbox on February 18.
