Unveiling 5 New Tarkir Cards: Dragonstorm in Magic: The Gathering

by Joseph Apr 13,2025

While Magic: The Gathering's high-profile crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing headlines, the upcoming set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is poised to make a significant impact. Returning to the iconic plane of Tarkir, this set promises to bring new excitement to the draft table next month. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder on Amazon, and we're thrilled to offer you an exclusive sneak peek at five cards that are expected to become staples in upcoming drafts.

**Flip through the gallery below to explore all five cards**, and continue reading for insights from Wizards of the Coast on their design and the set's overarching theme.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form what's known as a "cycle," each sharing common design elements across Magic's colors. All are affordable, common-rarity creatures with dual abilities: one linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans and another that converts mana into a color from that clan.

“Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing at all levels,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “We aimed to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs to address this. These creatures not only help with mana development but also allow players to build their board presence simultaneously, unlike other designs like tapped lands that solely focus on mana and can put you at a disadvantage.”

"We wanted to highlight the distinct characteristics of the clans compared to their previous iterations. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks, to the Temur's mystical Whispers, the protective Naga of the Sultai, the versatile Mardu military, and the regenerative Abzan clerics, each clan has its unique flair."

PlaySome recent Magic sets have faced criticism for relying too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even during revisits to established planes. This makes Tarkir: Dragonstorm's straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir stand out. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast, noting, "Our top-level pitch for Tarkir was set well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way for Tarkir, with the iconic Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role. Lauren and I felt the pressure to honor this beloved plane from the start, aiming to craft an authentic and meaningful next chapter."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set slated for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4.
