Just a few months after the Switzerland expansion made its digital debut, Ticket to Ride is back with another fan-favorite map: Japan. This marks the first time the Japan Expansion has transitioned from physical to digital, and it comes with a significant twist. In this version, success isn't just about racing to complete your own tickets; teamwork and collaboration are essential to win.
The Japan map introduces the Bullet Train network to Ticket to Ride, featuring high-speed shared routes that span the country. While everyone can use these routes, players are also expected to contribute to their construction. Skip the teamwork, and you'll face a 20-point penalty at the end of the match, a serious setback in a game where every point counts. This creates a tense balancing act between competition and cooperation.
Beyond strategy, the expansion offers more to explore. Two new characters, deeply connected to Japan's culture, join the game. Nakanishi Kimiko, a travel blogger, journeys across the country's colorful festivals with her loyal dog, while Moriyama Isamu, a Gyoji referee, adds a traditional flair to the board, connecting players to Japan's rich history.
The expansion also introduces four new additions to the train collection. The Ichi Eki Saki train and Tsuki Sleeper carriage offer a relaxed, scenic vibe, perfect for enjoying Japan's landscapes. In contrast, the Isogaba Maware train and Hayai carriage are designed for speed, ideal for navigating Japan's fast-paced routes.
This expansion is particularly timely as Japan is one of the most beautiful places to visit during springtime, thanks to the sakura blossoms.
