Marvel Rivals: A Competitive Landscape Shift for Overwatch 2
Since its release, Marvel Rivals has drawn considerable comparisons to Overwatch, and rightfully so. Both are competitive multiplayer hero shooters with strikingly similar mechanics and gameplay. The key difference? Marvel Rivals utilizes Marvel characters. Both games operate on a free-to-play model, monetized through live service updates and the introduction of new characters.
Marvel Rivals' explosive popularity since its December launch has fueled speculation about a decline in Overwatch 2's player base. This narrative suggests NetEase's Marvel Rivals is significantly impacting Blizzard's flagship title.
In a recent GamesRadar interview, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller acknowledged this new competitive landscape, stating that the level of similarity between the two games is unprecedented for Overwatch.

Keller described the situation as "exciting," praising Marvel Rivals for taking established Overwatch concepts in a "different direction." However, he also admitted that Marvel Rivals' success has compelled Blizzard to abandon a "playing it safe" approach with Overwatch 2.
This shift in strategy has led to significant changes announced for Overwatch 2 in 2025. While the roadmap includes expected new content, core gameplay will undergo a major overhaul, including the introduction of hero perks and the return of loot boxes.
The success of these changes remains to be seen. Nearly nine years after the original Overwatch's release and two and a half years after Overwatch 2's launch, Overwatch 2's Steam concurrent player numbers are at an all-time low, peaking at 37,046 in the last 24 hours. In contrast, Marvel Rivals maintains a top 10 position on Steam, with a concurrent player peak of 310,287 over the same period.

Overwatch 2's Steam reviews remain "mostly negative," reaching the dubious distinction of being the worst-reviewed game on the platform in August 2023. Criticism centers on monetization practices following the controversial transition from a premium model to free-to-play, rendering the original Overwatch unplayable. Further controversies, including the cancellation of the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, have exacerbated negative player sentiment.
