Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players

Rumors are swirling around the future of MultiVersus, with insider AusilMV hinting that Season 5, launching in early February, could be the game's final chapter. According to AusilMV, a trusted source indicated that this upcoming season is a crucial attempt to revive the game's fortunes. While these claims are currently unconfirmed, the situation appears critical for MultiVersus.

The game initially burst onto the scene in 2022, achieving a peak of 153,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, its online presence plummeted by 99% shortly thereafter, leading Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, labeling it an "open beta test." Despite efforts to relaunch the game with updates in May 2024, MultiVersus has struggled to recapture its initial popularity.

Season 5 represents what could be a last-ditch effort by the developers to rekindle player interest. This season is essentially a relaunch, though the developers have opted to classify the 2022 release as a "beta." The decision to temporarily shut down the game in June 2023 was met with disappointment, particularly from players who had purchased the premium edition to support the developers.
