Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

by Sebastian Mar 21,2025

The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch failed to achieve the necessary success to sustain the game and the studio. While initially optimistic, with approximately 400,000 players in the first week and a peak concurrent player count of around 10,000 across all platforms, the game ultimately lacked the sustained player base and revenue to cover operational costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the funding needed to keep Spectre Divide running. Mitchell acknowledged the current challenging climate within the gaming industry.

The statement continues that Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days. Players who spent money since the Season 1 launch will receive a full refund. This announcement contradicts previous reports in October 2024, where Mitchell stated that Spectre Divide was secure and that Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support it long-term.

IGN's August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide's unique Duality system, allowing players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the game's swift closure follows a string of high-profile live-service game failures, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord.
