Cyberpunk 2 Enters Development Phase as Witcher 4 Team Expands

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that Cyberpunk 2 (codenamed Project Orion) has entered pre-production. The announcement accompanied their latest financial results, revealing that the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 10 million copies sold.

Currently, 96 of the studio's 730 developers are assigned to Cyberpunk 2, while the majority (422) are focused on The Witcher 4. Both projects remain in early development stages, but the official naming of Cyberpunk 2 marks an important milestone.

Cyberpunk Creator Shares Early Sequel Details

While concrete details about Cyberpunk 2 remain scarce, creator Mike Pondsmith recently teased some insights at Digital Dragons 2025. Pondsmith, who collaborated closely on Cyberpunk 2077, confirmed his advisory role this time—reviewing scripts and visiting CD Projekt's offices to provide feedback on design elements.

"Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments, and seeing what they had: 'Oh look, this is the new cyberware, what do you think?' 'Oh yeah, that's pretty good, that works here.'"

He also revealed a major addition: the sequel will introduce a brand-new city alongside Night City. According to Pondsmith, this location has a distinct "Chicago gone wrong" aesthetic—though whether it is literally future Chicago remains unconfirmed.

"It doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I said, 'Yeah, I can see this working.'"

CD Projekt's Expanding Gaming Universe

The studio remains heavily committed to multiple projects. Beyond Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4, CD Projekt is working on a new Cyberpunk Netflix animated series following the success of Edgerunners. Additionally, a Cyberpunk 2077 Nintendo Switch 2 port is set to launch next month.

CD Projekt Red Games in Development

With so much in the pipeline, fans of both franchises have plenty to look forward to—even if release dates remain far off.
