Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR release, scheduled for Spring 2025. Dive in to explore the exciting features and updates awaiting in Civ 7 VR.
Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a grand entrance into the world of virtual and mixed reality, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks a pioneering move for the franchise into immersive gaming, courtesy of 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Civ 7’s Executive Franchise Producer, Dennis Shirk, shared his enthusiasm in a 2K blog post, saying, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, also expressed his excitement, stating, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
While Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table, allowing them to navigate and strategize as if playing a tabletop game brought to life. Players can choose between immersive virtual reality or mixed reality, with the ability to switch modes seamlessly. In VR, players find themselves in a majestic museum, overlooking a personalized vista of their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table dynamically adjusts to the player's real-world environment.
The game supports single-player, cooperative, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Whether filling your game with AI opponents or competing against friends, Civ 7 VR promises a dynamic multiplayer experience. Players can interact with each other across the Command Table, represented as their chosen world leaders. To participate in online multiplayer, a 2K Account and a Meta Account are required.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has taken player feedback from Civ 7’s early access period seriously. Announced via the game's official Twitter (X) page, the team is committed to addressing the issues raised by the community. Civ 7’s Advanced Access, available since February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition buyers, has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, particularly regarding the User Interface (UI).
In response, Firaxis Games has promised significant UI improvements, aiming to make interactions more intuitive, enhance map readability, and address formatting issues. They've also listened to community requests for additional features, including team-based multiplayer, a broader range of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is planned for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crisis adjustments, and bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific release date yet announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and is set for a full release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
