Ubisoft has published a new article exploring the gameplay mechanics of Assassin's Creed: Shadows, with a spotlight on the gear and progression systems for protagonists Yasuke and Naoe. A particularly exciting addition is an upgraded Hidden Blade, a feature long-time fans are sure to welcome.
Each hero possesses a unique skill tree that reflects their individual approach to combat—Yasuke excels in samurai arts, whereas Naoe masters shinobi tactics. Skill points can be invested to unlock new weapon talents or refine combat techniques. Mastery points are earned by completing open-world activities or defeating formidable opponents such as Daimyo samurai.
To maintain balanced character development, both Yasuke and Naoe will level up simultaneously, so neither falls behind. Unlocking high-level abilities often involves completing specific tasks, like locating a secretive shinobi faction. Other upgrades are linked to the "Knowledge" meter, which fills by studying ancient texts or praying at shrines. Achieving the sixth Knowledge rank unlocks an entirely new skill tree.
Ubisoft also detailed the equipment system, featuring items across five rarity levels: common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary. Players can enhance their gear at a blacksmith and apply custom visual designs. Armor and weapons may also include special perks that can completely change how you play.
The Hidden Blade makes a return as the ultimate assassin's instrument, delivering instant lethality with a single, precise strike. Assassin's Creed: Shadows launches worldwide on March 20 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
