Assassin's Creed Shadows introduces two compelling protagonists: the Shinobi Naoe and the Samurai Yasuke. However, the ability to switch between them isn't immediately available. Let's clarify when and how you gain control of both.
The game's opening, a roughly 90-minute prologue, offers alternating gameplay between Naoe and Yasuke. Following this, you'll exclusively play as Naoe for several hours. Don't expect to wield your katana as Yasuke right away! Access to Yasuke is initially restricted, remaining unavailable until near the end of Act I, specifically during the "Temple of the Horseman" quest. He then features briefly in the "Fire and Lightning" quest. Only after completing this quest and Act I can you freely switch between Naoe and Yasuke.
How Long Until You Can Switch Protagonists in Assassin's Creed Shadows?
My playthrough took approximately 10 hours to reach the point where protagonist switching is unlocked, though this included significant side content. A more focused approach could likely achieve this in 6 to 8 hours.
Switching Between Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin's Creed Shadows
Once unlocked, switching is straightforward. Fast traveling offers a prompt to select either Naoe or Yasuke at your destination. Certain story quests also provide the choice of protagonist.
When Can You *Not* Switch Protagonists?
While post-Act I offers considerable freedom, specific story moments and major quests will lock you into a single character. Keep in mind that some quests and activities are exclusive to either Naoe (indicated by a Shinobi hood) or Yasuke (indicated by a Samurai helmet).
Assassin's Creed Shadows is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
