Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

by Daniel Mar 16,2025

Surviving a zombie apocalypse in Project Zomboid requires more than just finding shelter; it demands securing it. While finding a safe haven is the first step, keeping the undead hordes at bay is a whole different ball game. One of the most effective, and readily available, methods is barricading your windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up your windows, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential supplies, simply right-click on the window you wish to secure. Your character will automatically begin the process of hammering the plank into place. Each window can support up to four planks, significantly increasing its resilience.

Finding the necessary materials is relatively straightforward. Hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, closets, and similar locations. Wooden planks are frequently discovered at construction sites, or, in a pinch, can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture like shelves and chairs. For those playing with admin privileges, the "/additem" command offers a convenient alternative.

Barricaded windows offer significantly improved protection against zombie incursions compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you install, the more time it will take for the undead to breach your defenses. To remove planks, right-click on the boards and select the "Remove" option. Remember, you'll need either a claw hammer or a crowbar to accomplish this.

It's important to note that larger furniture items, such as bookshelves or refrigerators, are ineffective as window barriers. Both players and zombies will pass right through them. While repositioning furniture is a valid interior design option, it won't offer any protection against the undead.

For even stronger barricades, consider using metal bars or sheets. However, this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
