PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports franchise 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the undisputed champion. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a hands-on preview, it's a promising return.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished gameplay. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an expansive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the core gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, were easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic offers multiple control schemes. The right stick option, allowing for precise shot shaping, proved particularly satisfying. Difficulty levels range from forgiving "Perfect Swing" to challenging settings that penalize imprecise movements. Lateral movement on the tee box adds strategic depth. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, enhanced the experience.
The MyCareer mode incorporates narrative elements, offering choices that impact stats and gameplay. A memorable cameo from Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a touch of humor. Gear upgrades and weekly quests further enhance the progression system.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, provides sufficient customization options, complemented by skill trees. Multiplayer features, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction. Asynchronous modes cater to players with varying time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent quality across all aspects without any major flaws. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a strong contender for golf enthusiasts and players seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
