MultiVersus Shuts Down After Season 5 Ends in May

by Olivia May 22,2025

Player First Games has officially announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, with the final curtain set to fall on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a detailed blog post on their website, signaling the end of support for the beloved crossover brawler. MultiVersus, which made its grand debut on May 28 of last year, is gearing up for its last hurrah with Season 5 kicking off next week on February 4, and running until its final day in May 2025. At that point, online play will cease, but Player First Games has assured fans that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline through local gameplay and training modes.

Expressing their gratitude, the MultiVersus team stated, “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Player First Games has also announced that real-money transactions for MultiVersus will no longer be available starting today. However, players can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the end of support on May 30. Additionally, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledged the game as a major disappointment. In a financial call last November, the company disclosed that MultiVersus had significantly underperformed expectations, leading to a substantial $100 million writedown in their games sector. This added to the total of $300 million in losses following the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Further turmoil within Warner Bros. Games was highlighted by the departure of David Haddad, the head of Warner Bros. Games, amid a challenging 2024.

“We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated Gunnar Wiedenfels, the chief financial officer, during the November call.

Although the news of MultiVersus' closure comes just days before its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to go out with a flourish. Alongside the usual seasonal updates, new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the fray. Lola Bunny, the Looney Tunes icon, can be unlocked through a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman, the DC superhero, will be available via the battle pass. Both characters will be accessible starting next week, ensuring that the final season of MultiVersus is packed with action and excitement.
