If you ever questioned whether *Rune Slayer* qualifies as an MMORPG, let this settle the debate: it has fishing. Because as any seasoned gamer knows, fishing mechanics are the unofficial hallmark of the genre. But jokes aside, you're here to master *Rune Slayer's* fishing system, and we've got you covered. Trust us – we struggled through the learning curve too, but after much trial and error, we're ready to break down this surprisingly unintuitive system (especially compared to *Fisch*).

Preparing for Your Fishing Adventure
Before casting your line, you must accept Simon the Fisherman's quest (the white-haired NPC stationed at one of the piers where Barracudas swim). His simple request? Catch 5 "fish" in exchange for a Tackle Box (you'll understand the quotation marks soon enough).
Here's the catch: you'll need proper fishing gear – specifically a rod and bait. And wouldn't you know it, Simon conveniently sells both.
Start by purchasing the Wood Fishing Rod and Worms from Simon. While 5 worms are the bare minimum, we recommend buying 10 to avoid return trips. Important note: you don't actually equip the bait – worms simply need to reside in your inventory. Each successful catch automatically consumes one worm.
Here's the surprising requirement: You need at least 5 worms to catch anything. Our initial attempt with just one worm proved fruitless – only when we stocked up did we start getting bites. For easy tracking, place your worms on the hotbar. Once properly equipped, you're ready to fish.
The Art of Fishing in Rune Slayer
First, select your Wood Fishing Rod (no need to equip it – just have it accessible via hotbar or inventory). Your character will automatically hold it properly.
Hold M1 to cast, ensuring your lure lands in water (the pier beside Simon works perfectly). Watch the bobber carefully – when you see one or two distinctive ripples, press M1 again to reel in.
Success isn't guaranteed. More often than not, you'll come up empty. When you do get a bite, it might be junk – but happily, Simon counts trash as valid catches (hence our earlier "fish" notation).
The strategy boils down to: cast, observe ripples, click, and repeat until you've collected five items. In our experience, only two were actual fish – the rest were disappointing Old Cups.
After five "catches", report back to Simon. Your reward? The coveted Tackle Box – immediately store any remaining worms here to free up inventory space.
